8 Steps to Lower Your Electric Bill

May 20, 2014 | Personal Finance

If you’ve ever wondered how to lower your electric bill, here’s how in 8 painless steps. You’ll be on your way toward saving money and the environment in no time.

Ways to Save on Your Electric Bill

Some energy saving tips you can implement include:

  • Wash clothes in cold water. Almost 90 percent of energy consumed by washing machines is used when heating water. So, cold water could save a lot of energy and dollars.
  • Invest in a space heater. Instead of using central heat, purchase a space heater to warm the room you are using. An electric blanket is another cost and energy-efficient option.
  • Opt for a clothesline. Only use the dryer when you absolutely need to. Hang dry your clothes to help cut down energy. Remember: big appliances use big energy.
  • Energy-efficient bulbs. LED bulbs are eco-friendly and are a great starting point as you work on how to lower your electric bill. However, make sure you do your research because the kind of bulb you buy will impact how much energy you save.
  • Replace the air conditioner filter. Always clean the air conditioner filter. It can exhaust 5 to 15 percent more electricity.
  • Unplug electronics. Did you know electronic items still use energy when they are plugged in? Sixty to 80 percent of the electricity they use is consumed when they’re idle. If they are plugged into the socket, it’s using electricity.* So, as you figure out how to lower the electric bill, consider plugging out your electronics.
  • Clean the lint filter in the dryer. Much like the air conditioner filter, your lint filter is just as important. Dust particles impede the flow of air causing the dryer to work that much harder.
  • Purchase a programmable thermostat. Programming your thermostat to control your heat and AC settings throughout the day could save you up to 33 percent on energy costs and trim down your carbon footprint at the same time. They are very affordable and will cost between $35 and $40.

Although you might spend money as you come up with ways to save on your electric bill, it is well worth it in the long run.
